TAHITIAN MOON SAND (BLACK SAND)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use it with rays and have for many years now. It looks sharp but they don't seem to have a problem covering them selves in it and swimming around.I ve used it with almost all my fish and they all have never had any problems with it i highly recomend it it looks great. The only negative aspect is my clown loaches appear a little darker with a dark sand.

i was gonna use it with my rays but im gonna stick with bare bottom so much easier to keep neat but the redwood forest and tahition moon will be in other tanks very soon

Where do you guys get your Moon sand? I only see them locally at Petsmart. Pretty expensive like around $20 -$25 per bag. I really like the look. I was at a local plant nursery and saw they had black sand on their cactus pots. The sold little bags maybe 2lbs each of black sand under the brand Cactus Korral. They look like those black sand you see on outdoor public ashtrays. I wonder if they are quartz like 3M color quartz?

I have it in two tanks a 135 and an 80. It is a pain to wash (gives off some greenish sludge when you start to rinse it), but it really makes your tank look nice, HOWEVER, you might want to consider that dark gravel will tend to give you dark fish! If you take a fish from a tank with light gravel/sand and place it in a tank with black sand the fish may not look as attractive as it did with light gravel, it may even lose all its color. My regular Severums got so dark they nearly looked all black. Same with Rainbow Cichlids. Other fish really look great, like clown loaches, gold Severums, etc. Just something to consider. Also, a friend did a test on plant growth in various substrates. The Tahitian Blank sand was best for him, followed by filter sand, flourite/gravel mix, then plain gravel. For me, flourite, followed by filter sand, gravel, Tahitian sand, so results obviously vary.

I just got some black "Marine sand" by Estes for a tank I plan to set up. It's inert also, and my buddy at the LFS store said it's cleaner and doesn't leach as bad when you first put it in. (He's used both on display tanks at his store.) It's cheaper as well, the selling point for me. I have tanks all over the house with pool filter sand, I just wanted something different for this one.
