Tail damage and solutions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Honestly I dont mind split fins its adds character to the fish and it's not a show specimen why be bothered by it. Its like just a scar to me. What's the purpose of keeping this jaguar long term? Enjoy it as it is. And congrats on the new addition. Hope you enjoy him for years to come.

The tail will stay split because it's healed that way. If you want it to repair, you need to make the wound fresh including edges as well as the base. Probably help if you keep the split closed or very close. Super glue is a good method to suture hanging flesh/gaping wounds or cauterize bad bleeds.

The fish will lose a lot of it's momentum & thrust with a tail that can't hold water but they get well fed in captivity anyway.

If you feel uncomfortable doing it then you should not do it. The split looks deep enough, i.e. into "the meat", that I doubt it can be repaired by a simple trim of fin tissue. And when it comes to a home hobbyist attempting to sedate a fish...there is a razor-thin line between "sedated" and "deceased". If this were as easy and sure a fix as the seller suggested...he would have done it himself.

If you decide to proceed, I would suggest a mild sedative; I find vodka very effective. This is best administered to the keeper rather than the fish. Adjust dosage according to personal taste, while sitting in a comfortable chair in front of your aquarium. Relax, watch the fish, enjoy...repeat as needed. :)

Hi lads, with a bit of time and patience he is finnally starting to settle in a bit more. Some updated pics below.

Im not confident in cutting his tail back, but do you think it would be possible to glue the tail together to close that split, if so, what glue would you use?

Wouldn’t suggest to glue the tail together. No guarantee it’ll help it to grow the tail better.
