My stingray lost a portion of her tail about a month ago, i added aquarium salt to the tank and it seemed to heal up.

tonight, i noticed that her tail tip is rotting again, about 2 or 3 mm so far. i added more salt.

earlier today, i gave them a 30%ish water change, did everything the way i usually do it. used seachem prime to condition.

is there anything i can do to help heal her tail? i do not want to lose her, and so far i haven't found much info on it, in particular pertaining to rays and their sensitivity to most things.

should i be removing the carbon from my filter, as i would if using melafix?
daily water changes? adding salt every water change? raise or lower the tank temperature?

any advice would be appreciated.

tank has been cycled for over half a year, no new additions, only 2 rays purchased and added at the same time. no other stock in the tank at all.
ammonia and nitrites are 0, nitrates are low. 20ish on tester strip.

Carbon will take most meds out of the tank so yes remove.

I would try to work out what is causing the rot.

Test many times per week, there may be ammonia spikes caused by too little filtration.

Keep the sand hoovered at least once per week and I assume the w/c is 30% per week?

k, will remove the carbon asap.

i have been testing the water conditions for the last week, and just tested them again a few min ago. 0 ammonia and nitrite, 20 nitrate.

i do water changes bi weekly, 25-35% each. vacuum the sand every time i water change.

should i be removing the hosing from my filter and cleaning that out as well?

also, do i add meds or just the salt? i was adding melafix before, but it did not seem to do the trick over the week period of use. (carbon was out at the time)

it is possible the other ray may be nibbling on the tail that would seem most likely to me

If it where me to help her heal I would just stick with the salt no meds

start doing 50% water changes 2 times a week to keep the water as clean and fresh as possible

Keep in mind that doing water changes also replaces minerals and other essential elements in the water. So it is not a bad idea to do water changes even if your nitrates are testing low

i agree^^

if the tail is bitten or broke off b4 the barb, it will not grow back

i was thinking that maybe it was from him nipping at her tail. she's lost about an inch of it, not from the rot, but bite or something.

i did a 50% tonight and added salt in, will stick to that. the little white end has already started to come off, so i hope it's getting better.

i will continue to do the bi weekly water changes. sometimes i do mini changes if i wanna vacuum out the extra.

thanks for the help guys.

Dose salt up to the correct amount and then just replace the amount that is removed in water changes ( if that makes sense?)

It shouldn't take long to heal
