While watching my 40g I noticed that the tail of my gymnallabes typus catfish is diamond shaped and that has me thinking, are there any cichlid species that have diamond shaped tails or anything unique like that?

That's pretty much it, everything else is just on the spectrum of neolamprologus to cichlasoma

Actually the genus Pelvicachromis would make great tank mates for your cat.
They come from the same geographic area of Africa, and prefer the same type soft, low pH, tannin stained water, with leaf litter the cats do.

Gotta give another vote to kribs:

I don’t know about eel cat diets, so I’m not sure if they’d become food or not. They can definitely hold their own in a fight though - my pair runs the tank. At breeding time, nobody is allowed in their half of the 75.

Another fish, though saltwater, that comes to mind for me is the aurora goby (amblyeliotris aurora):

Not mine, but it gives a good shot of the tail:

I’m lucky if I can get close enough to the tank to see its full body - much less get a shot.
