Tailless ray?

There is a guy here in Michigan that breeds a lot of rays. One of his pups got it's tail chewed up by the male in the pond. The tail was really mangled. He pulled it from the pond, covered it with a wet towel, placed it on a cutting board and used his dive knife and a hammer to cut of the rest of the tail.

The ray look really strange but, it lived. It grew like crazy and will probably end up being a great breeder for him.

can you get pictures of this ray???
 
Wow, not that I would ever do this but do you know more about the procedure itself? Did he use anything to prevent it from bleeding out or was it a simple chop and thats it?

Seems to happen a lot (pups tail get chewed)... I half wondered if that would be the reason for something like this.
