it all depends how short the tail is
if its tailless like you stated then it maybe a problem as the rays use the tail like a rudder to steer when they swim
one thing i have noticed with fresh imports in the past with the airline on the stinger is it causes a lot of stress
i had have rays with the airline on the stinger that wouldn't feed after taking the airline off the ray was eating the next day
