What I did notice is that the large one (on the left) is much more active now, even saw it chase those convicts a little)
and I think the smaller one (one the right, possible female) is getting larger now..maybe around 7"..at least that's what it seems like

the blue is in his private 75g. safe and sound :)

you know what you could try?

put a flat piece of slate on the "female" side of the tank. Then aim a powerhead at the the slate from the "male" side. Crank the temp up, feed lots of live food, and then start cycling the tank with colder PWCs. Might not do anything but hey...If "she" drops eggs on the slate, and "he" fertilizes them, the current from the powerhead will push them across the divider onto the eggs.

I honestly think though that they're more like tetras than cichlids. I think they need an uber massive (pond swimming pool) sized tank and a shoal. Think about it. Tetras nip each others fins too. They're the same, same family, same environment, same anatomy.

yea, I already have the powerhead (hydro 4)on the male side thinking that will "help" the sperms to "swim" to the other side..but will see how that goes. I was thinking of some nesting material around the divider but not sure which ones are good..so you think slate will be better? my old rbps just breed on gravels.
um...all the oscars are gone now...so not more live food..unless they can catch those convicts..or I can buy some fresh tilapia from asian markets :) not sure if they have small ones.

is that plastic egg crate separating the tank?

yes that's a plastic egg crate in the middle.

found this article:

Now, that was documented as breeding between S. spilopleura in captivity at the shedd aquarium in Chicago, IL, but Frank thinks that it was actually S. sanchezi. This is noteworthy because S. sanchezi is a member of the rhombeus group, not the spilo group. Anyways, since your trying to breed rhoms I thought it might be useful because these might also be members of the rhom complex.

It says, "February 11, while making a check after the close of the aquarium, I noticed two piranhas, one smaller than the other, side by side in mid-water. Finding two piranhas so close together and not helping themselves to a piece of their neighbor is most unusual. As I watched, the fish slowly rose by beats of their pectoral fins. Just beneath some floating water sprite they tilted sharply upward, came close together, trembled, and parted. A cascade of eggs was falling through the water and was almost instantaneously devoured by the Exodon and the parents themselves. These eggs were scooped into a tray and I noticed little translucent globules on the roots of the floating water sprite. There they were in numbers, clustered like plums on a tree!"

Now other sources I've found said that floating water sprite or water hyacynths (sp?) are the preferred breeding medium. Maybe you should plant some of the that on the divider and in the middle of the tank.

thanks man. I've see floating water sprite somewhere before I can try to find those but can I use other floating plants as well?I'm just going to put them around divider..I hope those convicts will get cleaned up if they do breed. if they eat all the eggs I would be so pissed.

I already have some other floating plants (not sure which kind) around divider and hopefully they'll grow out soon
