hey so my friend just gave me a redtail catfish today as a late birthday present and he doesnt know much about fish or how big they will grow. sadly i have to give him away soon because i cant keep him. right now i have him in a 10 gallon tank with my ghost catfish and i know that later on he will grow to be a monster. he is maybe 2.5inch right now not sure. i know that 10 gallon is not a good tank to have a redtail but hopefully i can find him a new home before he get out of hand. i am not a catfish expert honestly i dont even know how to take care of one i only know the basic like the tempature that the suppose to be in but other than that i know nothing about them. i only have floating pellets and i notice he/she stay at the bottom of the tank most of the time so how can i feed him/her the pellets. so do u guys have any ideas how do take care of him for the time being until i can find him a new home?

RTC will eat anything, get some shrimp from the grocery store and cut it into small pieces. And he'll be as happy as a pig in mud.

They are very hardy fish and super cool! and as long as you keep the water clean and his belly full he'll be fine (: I wish I was closer to take him off of your hands as my big guy (only 7" but ive had him since he was the size of yours) just passed due to my lfs having an ich outbreak and his tankmate infected them /:

thx guys (: do u know if he/she eat pellets? the only thing i have close to fresh shrimps are dry shrimps lol but the dry shrimp float and he/she is at the bottom of the tank most of the time or it is that he/she getting use to the tank right now? i look up some video about RTC and they look awesome but the tank that people have them in are like over 400 gallon. i wish i have that kind of money in my hand to get one and some people have them in pond and they are like huge! i really want to feed him/her 1 time first before i find him/her a new home. i really enjoy and love feeding my fish. it's really exciting to watch them feed but how do i feed the RTC? is it because he/she getting use to the new tank or i have to get some food that sink down to the bottom for him/her to eat?

i do a 30% water change every week so i think the water is not the problem im just worring how to feed the fish haha. i never have a RTC before so i dont know how to feed him/her. that would be really awesome if u were close by i want to find him a new home before he grow big. im sorry about ur fish problem. my friend betta (not the one that gave me the RTC but he is still cool) use to get ich a lot and he just put aquarium salt in the tank and do daily water change (im not sure if he really do daily water change) and his fish got better in a few days. i honestly dont know how that work for him but u can try that out and see if it work for u. that is the only knowledge i have so far on ich but i do wish ur fish get better and i wish u luck (: hope that will work for u too

I'm surprised the fish hasn't answered your question for you by coming up to the surface to eat the pellets. Does he swim around at all? They normally do swim all over, and gulp things off the surface as well.
I'm sorry you aren't able to keep him, but kudos to you for doing all the right things.

I'm sorry I don't really know how to work this site /:

I only see him/her under my drift wood. When I turn off the light I saw a little movement but not much. He/she haven't been moving around much. I read that RTC r highly active fish and they move around a lot but I'm not sure what really going on. I haven't seen him go to the surface yet

Once it gets settled innitll have loads of personality. They're swimming garbage cans that look like Oreos. All you need to take care of them is clean water, lots of food and a swimming pool. If you can provide those three things, they're about the easiest fish to care for that you'd ever hope to own.
