Taking Care of Redtail Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most of their koi are about maybe 12-15 inch? And the cichlids are about maybe 3-5 inch. Yea but hopefully that doesn't happen

Yeh they will definetly be eaten. Think you might need to find another home for it. When its 3 - 4 feet, theres not meny fish it wont prey on, and but if you can find someone with equally large fish then its great.

Just bought an RTC at about the 2.5" mark myself for my 90 g. He usually chills at the bottom with the light on during the day, but at night he flies all over the tank. He's really cool to watch, moves like a shark. I love it! I also crumble up large floating hikari pellets and feed him at night. It works out pretty well, until my 6" GT catches wind of it. .. He wants all the food for himself.

I think I might build an indoor pond soon this summer because I'm finish with high school. If my friend dad can't keep it anymore then I will let it have the pond but I don't want a too big pond I'm prob going to build a 100-200 gallon pond with a big width. But in the future somewhere I'm going to give the RTC another try when I have a place for it or this summer if my friend dad can't keep it. But I hope the RTC can stay with them because their pond is like a swimming pool lol

Forget the pond if the one your making is only 200 gallons. It's not worth the effort because it's still too small. It won't suffice

Oh really how much room do they need? I don't want to make it too big because then I won't have place to put my stuff. But I do like the RTC I was thinking it would be cool if they were in like a pack. Can u have the RTC in a pack? How big of a place does it need to be to contain them in a pack? I'm not even sure but it thought it was kinda cool if there is like a pack of them around the pond haha

Oh one more question today I visit my RTC and I saw it was like hanging upside down on the under the drift wood like a pleco. Is that normal for a RTC? I ask my friend dad if the RTC is still eating normally he said yea it ate everytime he drop a piece of shrimp down and he feed it twice a day in the morning and at night. The RTC still swimming normally when it's outside of the drift wood but when it go under it kinda like hang on to the drift wood like a pleco hanging on the glass

As long as it is eating, it's fine.

A 200 gallon tank isn't even big enough for a half-grown one. We are talking about a pool that should be about 8-10 feet in diameter

They do great in groups but you will need to think exponentially in pool size - Thousands of gallons.

Tank sizes of RTCs are often discussed here.
A healthy adult RTC in captivity will bee around 4 feet or possibly even bigger, so it would make a 8 feet pool look small.
The RTCs i have seen at public aquaria where all very active, and have heard the same from others that have kept large RTC's.
I remember once someone posted a thread on General Aquaria Discussion, about a guy on craigslist that had a Red Devil, or Texas Cichlid in a round tank that was about twice the lenght of the fish, and people where very angry at that guy, som even threadened him if i remember correctly, or said he derseved to be beaten or something. I dont get why its acceptable to keep an RTC in a pond/tank thats twice the width of the fish, but not a Red Devil, Texas Cichlid. The activity level difference cant be that big.

Oh ok glad to hear that he doing fine then haha.

Wow a thousand gallon pond that is huge. Well that change my mind about keeping one. I do want a big outdoor pond but at the same time I don't really know how a pond work like. I keep my fish in tanks and I know how tanks work like. I have a filter that pump 2 or 3 times the size of the tank have a heater really for the winter. But an out door pond I don't know what I'm suppose to do in the winter when the water get cold and what I'm suppose to do when there like stuff that is not suppose to be in the pond get in. Like my tank r cover with lids and inside my room I know nothing is going in. I know some people have pond and like cats and bird come and steal their fish so that make me kinda nervous about an outdoor pond. Well I'm prob going to start with a small indoor pond first and get an idea of how a pond work then I might make an outdoor pond. About 2 years ago my neighbor dug a pond and in about 4-6 months all their fish die. Idk if they don't know about keeping fish or something got in their pond. So I am kinda nervous about keeping an outdoor pond I would be really sad if I just wake up one day and see my fish die

The only way to have a redtail cat happy and healthy long-term is a thousands gallon pond, inside - people do it in their basement - but you need to do a lot of research first.
Doing a "small one first" is fine, but only if you intend to build a bigger one, as the fish outgrows it. The bigger the catfish gets, the harder you will be able to give it away.
