When my hubby got ready to transfer this summer he brought his fish home to FL (from Il). He bought a 45 gallon garbage can, put the plants and some driftwood in with the fish and ran an aerator off a converter. He did do one waste change but I was surprised, every single fish survived even though it took an extra day due to car trouble.
