Can you just go out into the woods, find a peice of wood, soak it, and put it in your tank? Is this ok for fish? What do you have to do with it before putting it in?

Make sure its heavy and not rotted or fresh, SAP can harm ur tank, also bake, boil and soak!

Here's my piece I found awhile back buried in a river bank, their roots.

Wow thats a nice peice looks better than most sold at lfs. Alright Vet i'll go for it.

Yup it is, you'll find that killer piece, I normally walk the shore line of a creek or river, look in the water, if you see some cool wood further investigate, no sense in spend 100$ on something that you yourself can obtain!

Goodluck and pics!

Be careful what kind of wood you put in there. As was already mentioned, sap can be dangerous, and there are species of plant that could be harmful to your fish. The advantage of malaysian driftwood or manzanita or mopani or something is that it is known to be harmless.

If you're unsure, you could always "quarantine" the wood. After preparing it for your tank (as advised above) put it in a smaller tank or tub or something with some tester fish (some minnows or something cheap) and if it doesn't effect them and they survive for a while, it's most likely safe. Just a thought.

Sure can. I found a piece on the side of the road. If its a dry piece then you don't have to worry about aquatic parasites like if you pulled on out the river. I can't post pics but you can see it in my tank rescape thread.

Hey thanks guys for all of your input, found some killer peices. Best part about it is that i live near a river but to get there you walk through the woods, so i got all this for free while just walkin around in my backyard! Its going to take TONS of work to get these peices clean, safe, and ready for my tank, but overall i think its gonna be worth it
