Some say SA/CA some say African. I'd go with African. My buddy has one that is around 12" living in a 55 with Rift lake cichlids!!! All the cichlids are under 5 inches as well. It seems as if the Butti is the Groundskeeper and keeps everyone under control. We recently added a small Butti around 3" and he hangs out right with the big guy.

I used to have my 5inch butti with a xingu 1 pike, now it's in with 2 foot long oscars for a while untill i get him a tank of his own.

In bigger tanks I've seen then mixed with Oscars, JDs, convicts, jaguars, and other SA/CA cichlids with little or no problems. Other mixers I've seen bichirs, archer fish, certain catfish, arowanas, flowerhorns, some eels, plecos, hujetas.
