the wide would be better for the fish, but also depend on what kind of fish will be in there!

Wider is usually cheaper as well as taller requires thicker glass.
Though i find the tall aquariums are much more impressive.

36" gives you more options in regards to what you can keep, but 36" height is much more impressive looking (IMO). How about the best of both worlds and go with 8x3x3?

i'd say if the fish get close to 24" go with the 36" i like to have 1 1/2 times the max length of my biggest fish as the width of my tank, this gives them plenty of room to turn without being restricted to being up against the glass in order to turn around
