1 other question, the lfs says they "need" salt water later in life to even live. he said if i kept it in fresh forever they'd die over time? is this even true? i want one so bad n this i the closest lfs that has them in stock but there converted to salt
That may or may not be true. These fish are so new to the hobby that I don't think anyone knows what to expect as they mature. They're estuarian fish and continually transition from marine to freshwater. Their salinity requirements may change as they mature like other species (Monos, scats, etc). Or, they'll always have the ability to live comfortably in either salinity like some snooks and mullets.
Getting them back to fresh would probably be best by lowering the salinity slightly every other day by no more than .002. Figure it'll take roughly 2 weeks to get them back to fresh.

There was no transition problem from the start. They started hitting sticks and pellets from day one. I have more than one so, competition for food plays a big factor with 8 trying to be the first to get at any food that hits the surface. I have to toss in large handfuls so the gars have a shot at the sticks before the faster tarpon wipe the surface clean.
sorta weird that u say it takes 2 weeks. lfs converted them over in 2 days. in the wild they convert them selves within seconds as they enter streams or open marine water. owning seems badass n i want one lol
lolI was offering the safest method to convert them. I'm not there to monitor water quality and the amount of nitrites and pH level has a large bearing on the success of converting them without any deleterious effects.
