So the temps have plummeted over here in about three weeks, the pond has gone from 16 degree to 0 in that time, so quick the new covers have not even been sorted. I wanted to cover it because of all the problems last year.

So I'm out checking everything over as all sorts have frozen up with the new filters but everything is running just a daily check... And floating up with the air is the tancho kohaku I got this year, a fish I've always wanted:(

So I get the net and net the fish and it's mouth is just moving, all I can do is warm it up and see what happens, so I bucket it out and bring it inside.

4 hours later still alive

8 hours later trying to swim but still on it's side

12 hours later the fish has righted it's self and has been moved to my emergency big tub with air added.

24 hours hours later, it's fine. Now for the problem, what the hell do I do with it, it can't go back in the pond, it can't live out the winter in this container. So I contacted a old friend who kindly offered(a year ago) to walk me around his pond when I was having all the troubles with mine, and he's going to take it and look after it in his heated indoor koi pond for the winter. It's so rare that people are so good at times.

Moving to the heated pond tomorrow :

This has settled it for me, I'm redoing the pond in the new year. Block built, insulated and heated.

If nothing else it'll give Zen something to read, this time it will be done in a couple of weeks and not a long time;)

Hey, there are others that read as well, we just don't open our big mouths as much as he does (its hard to compete with him sometimes ;)).

Not post about the new sanke from either of you;);)

The new pond build will be done in about a week or so, finishing touches will take time but most of the planning is already done. About 36 hours for the plan, just got to do do a sun dance the week everything goes ahead. The big problem will be that this will be done in the middle of the big tank build/ get the house extended, better get some overtime in now!

Actually, I heard nothing from the big man for a while, I better mail him and make sure he's ok.

Good Luck on the move.

Oh man, beautiful kohaku!! How big is it? Good thing you were able to save that guy, I would have been devastated :(

Thank you, the move has been made but the problem is the temp holding tank that was planned is not big enough.

Thanks, I honestly thought I'd lost it. As said above the big problem now is instead of heating up slowly over a week or so in the holding tank, it's going to have to go straight into the heated pond. I dropped it off this morning and I was like 'no, what the hell do we do now?'

When I left the fish was in a large koi bowl floating on the heated tank. The idea being that it will still slowly warm up and hopefully be ok. Temp ramming koi is dangerous at best but it's better to go up than down(which I'm sure caused the problem).

I'm glued to the internet at the moment just waiting for news on it.

Sorry, to answer the question it's about 10'' and cost a small fortune, to me anyway.

This is the main reason behind the redo of the pond plus the origin of the fish stocked. They are mainly American koi, I know. The trouble is they don't really winter over there are are not used to the drop in temps. Out of the four I had in last year only two came through the winter. These two are fine at the moment with the cold so I'm guessing once they've had a winter they are fine.

Just got an update from the guy who is looking after it, after an essential (no other option) heat ramp and settling in period, it's eating already:headbang2

The fish is rocking in it's new heated environment, apparently it's taken to wearing over the top shorts and is sporting RayBan's, I'm an Oakley guy myself but hey :-)

Is he sipping Corona's now or sticking to the Boddington's?
