The more the merrier with both cyprichromis and xenotilapia. I would say a minimum of 7 cyps and try to go for 5ish xenos, although 4 will work. I would stick with those two species and maybe a fancy pleco or two.
 
I've kept 8 cyps with 12 shellies and it it didn't work. The group of 12 lamps were too agressive and in the end, I simply gave my lamps to my brother. The tank was a 60 gallon also, and I was also thinking about xenos until I saw victorians so I gave up my cyps for the vics.
 
I know these aren't exotic, but how about some Julie transscriptus with the Cyps. They breed easily and I doubt they would bother the Cyps..

Well Julies are actually really great at defending their young, even keeping of large fronts. I am not saying that cyps will attack them, but Julies chase anyone near by away. Well my julies breeding pair does!
 
My julies are agro. They chased all my fish. I kept them with nyerereis and they ruled the tank. I think that they will chase the cyps also.
