At the GPASI(local fish club) fish auction I bought 3 red fin compressiceps and 6 julidochromis dickfeldi. I had a couple question about these fish. 1 if they can go into the same tank and 2 what substrate sould I put in their tank. I know it sould be a sandy substrate, I just don't know if the sand sould be dark or light to bring out there best colors.

They can go in the same tank, but depending on tank size and territories/hideouts, the julies might narrow themselves down to a pair. in my opinion both species look better over tan or black sand. Pure white seems to reflect too much light and wash the colors out a bit.

Yeah they should work together. Red fins are sweet i have a bunch of fry growing out. Make a few seperate rock piles and maybe some shells for the compressiceps.

what size tank would you put all of them together in? Right now they are each in their own 20 gallon holding tank till I figure out what I am doing with them. Also, does anyone know any other tangs that would work in that tank with them?

I would put a group of shelldwellers in with them, probably multies or occies. If you want to do three species(comps, julies, and shellies) I would use a 40 breeder or a 75 (both have more sq. in. of floorspace than a 55g) If you are only doing the comps and julies, a 29 is the smallest I would go.

If I put them in a 75 with a few shellies, do I have room to add a fourth species? And what would you guys go with if I could.

I've never had 4 species in the same tank, I know people have done it successfully, but I don't have any recommendations.

you can definitely do 4 species in the same tank. especially since comps are grow VERY slow. make sure you have proper filtration and keep up with water changes and you'll be fine. in my show tank i have a colonies of frontosa, tricoti, multies, brevis, clown loaches, and a couple of comps.
