I have heard the Cichlids will eat the eyes of a pleco. Is this true??

I am looking to do a small group in a 29g tank

A lot of the agressive cichlids will pick at the plecos. Not necessarily pick out their eyes only. They usally pick at them until they die, then eat them. But that is not the case for every situation. Some plecos have been know to eat cichlids if given the opportunity.

It really depends on what type of cichlid you plan on putting in the tank and what type of pleco you plan on having. You don't have too many choices using a 29G tank though.

nothing that grows more then 8cm for the Cichlids. I am sure I can find a Pleco that will not grow much more then that too

They certainly aren't the best mix, for a number of reasons. Agression and incompatibility as well as competition for food and that one prefers hard alkaline water, the other soft slightly acidic water.

To keep a group in a 29 that stay 8cm or under, you are probably going to want to look at either shell dwellers of a dwarf cichlids. There aren't too many plecos that stay under 8cm. The smallest I can think of off the top of my head is 10-12 cm. You might be putting yourself in a pinch putting shellies or a dwarf species with plecos.

May I ask your reasoning behind the pleco? Cleaning or enjoyment?

I would not put them in there just for that. A 29 should be easy to control algae in my adjusting the lighting and such. I would just put a nice group of shell dwellers in there and be done with it. You could have a few more fish and a great little scene.

My plecos rarely eat algae, if you're looking at them solely for that purpose then keep looking. They produce MASSIVE amounts of waste, and don't really do that much for algae. The commons I have in my Afro tank eat the cichlid gold pellets.
