Tank background colour for monster fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say it depends on the fish color AND substrate...a guy on youtube had black background on SOLID black sand (150 gal) and it made the whole area of the room darker. Literally looked like a black hole and swallowed up the lighting. Then he scattered white rocks for 'contrast'. A pretty bizarre setup and weird to look at. Also the bigger the tank the more colors intensify, light or dark. White sand gets blinding and black looks like a sink hole. Doesn't always apply to backgrounds depending on if plants, rockwork or wood breaks it up.

Brown textured river sand is a good option in some cases or textured black sand with the gray/white bits in it. This looks really great with black/silver/striped fish. Can look good with white fish too. Even gray sand /gravel too.

or mix gravel in for texture and better color.

Black background = any bright color fish. White fish just ok
Blue background = reds, oranges, white, yellow fish pop the most.
