Tank Backgrounds.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Foam board does come in different colors. I've seen white & Blue ones. I don't notice the joint or seam. The two pieces that are taped to the back of my 5 foot tank aline up tight & even.

I cut a piece of styrofoam to fit the back panel of the tank, spray paint it black, and tape it to the back.
Besides liking the way the black look sets off the colors of the fish, it adds a bit of insulation, helping to hold temps more stable during power outages when I lived in a cold part of the U.S.
I also put styrofoam on sides on on the bottom of tanks for that reason. I cut another for the front to be added during during outages

That fish room looks like a science project lol

In a lot of ways, it was a side science project.
Being a former microbiologist, I experimented with concentrations of salt and other medications on diseases like ick.
On the way hard water vs soft water effected certain diseases and growth of bacteria, also on populations of bacteria on certain media.
I also kept log books over years on the the way water changes effected nitrate and pH concentration, and if certain cichlids were more or less prone to certain diseases under certain nitrate parameters.

Have you found many differences disease related between different water hardness?

I have noticed, certain bacteria (like the species that cause HLLE) require a very narrow pH range to actually infect.
So by placing a species of fish with no resistance to that bacteria (because it evolved in a low pH environment where that bacterial species could not live), a disease like HLLE has an easy entry into that less resistant fish species system.
And if you add high nitrate, (another factor those bacteria seem to prefer), infection seems to be almost inevitable as those fish age.
Experiments were also conducted with salinity and ick, and found I could cure ick just as easily without raising temp at a salinity of 3ppt or above.
It just takes a little longer for ick to complete its life cycle.

I often go to my local wilkos store as they allow you to take a length of wallpaper for free ? aquarium backgrounds are expensive so I save where I can, I often switch it up, although dont take down your last one before you get your next free bit else you will end up with a space background like me ??
