tank build need advice on sealing

NolaPete has mentioned in a few threads how a local guy has sealed glass to liner by using a rubber gasket of some sort. I don't recall the details but maybe one caulk was used to seal the gasket to the liner and another to seal the gasket to the glass?

Look up his first monster tank thread, the one with 3600 and redux in the title.

There are polyurethane caulks that will stick to both glass and liner. And there are polyurethane caulks that are fish safe. But I don't know if there are specific products that are both fish safe and that will bond to both materials. And then there is the whole issue with your comfort zone. I believe the youtube link posted earlier is an example of polyurethane caulk but that guy was in eastern Europe somewhere.

There was a lady who posted a thread on sealing a plywood tank with pond liner. She had either a glass or acrylic window. It surprised a lot of people, myself included. Maybe check the plywood tank sticky and see if you can find it.

Lastly there is the acrylic and bolt method that I have seen twice.

As an aside, I think somebody mentioned a pond liner as a way of saving money. Aren't pond liners something like $.60 to $1.00 per square foot?

You can get a 10 mil coating of epoxy for around $.50 per square foot once you factor in waste. 10 mil is around the amount that most epoxy companies suggest as being sufficient for waterproofing plywood. But most fish people apply it much thicker than that and if you add fiberglass there is that added cost plus you then need more epoxy.

So I'm not arguing that sealing a tank with epoxy, polyester or a elastomeric emulsion is cheaper but they are certainly competitive. To me a liner would be best for saving time and peace of mind, not cost savings.

And of course, your peace of mind would only be as good as the seal you could make between the glass and the liner. It is not a commonly used method so peace of mind may be hard to find.
