So some thoughts I had. To make a plywood tank stronger and lighter could you use an external metal frame instead of all the "normal" supports you see on most plywood builds?

you could just build a metal frame and lay the plywood inside. but 2x4's are hella cheaper than steel

i work for a machine shop so we get deals all the time. but was thinking tho save on the space the tank takes up that the metal frame would work well

No, metal and wood have different changes in size when it is warmer/hotter. Wood, even though you work at a place you can get metal, will still be cheaper.
