Tank crash! what was the cause?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
all my cichlids ... a couple pictus catfish... ornate, sen, and angle fish.

how many fish and how big are we talking here?
I'm wondering if you were at the limit of your filtration and one fish died, that spiked your ammonia, which killed off another one, another spike, more deaths...

Could have been a build up of dissolved organics causing a ph crash which in turn killed all of your BB. IF your PH dips much below 6 it will kill all your BB

Were any chemicals sprayed near the tank? Hygiene products, cleaning products, etc? I remember I had a tank in my garage once and my cousin was spraying WD40 on hit motorcycle chain and somehow got into my tank. The fish weren't showing any signs of stress but after a couple of days my fish were all floating lifeless near the surface. (I was pi**ed)

if ammonia, nitrites, AND nitrates were off the charts, then your tank is handling NO, but the amount of ammonia must have gone up. if all of your tests are right, and the tap had an insane amount of ammonia, then why and how?

do you do water changes with buckets? could a bucket have gotten ammonia in it from cleaning products? maybe you can call the water company and see if they know anything?

I just did my water changes as i normally do with my python. All fish were accounted for the night before and no chems were used near the tank. im really picky about that. Im sure it was the high amounts of ammonia in my tap water but why would that take so long to do any damage. That should have been pretty quick and obvious.
