So it's been a while since I posted. Still fish keeping and enjoying the hobby till 2 days ago while doing WC.
First Tank 75g WC done and fine
Second tank. 210g WC done and looking fine. Oscar's bichirs and blood parrot annoyed as usual.
Moved on the the 3rd tank 150g gold fish tank.

While filling up the 3rd tank . I noticed my Oscar's and blood parrot acting weird and floating sideways or just sitting at the bottom. Sniffed the tank water and it smelled like chlorine, smelled like a pool.
Immediately drained the tank and refilled but the damage was done.
Thru the blood parrot in the 75g, he came back to normal an hour later. 2 of my bichirs were dead. 2 Oscar's not looking good
Today lost another bichir. One Oscar laying on his side the other is okish
Doing another WC as we speak. Havnt checked parameters looking for my test kit, but even then it's a year old dont know if the chemical will be good anymore.

The bichir I lost today had red coloration near his tail anybody know what it means, might help me understand what happened. Dont know why my 210g smelled like it did but the tank done before and after it are fine and smell like normal fish tanks.
Used the same Seachem safe on all my tanks.

Any input appreciated

Did you forget dechlorinator?
It's possible your water supplier did a big dose of chlorine after some work on the pipes.
No sir I remember dropping in seachem safe once I started fill up. Same as I do with the other tanks.

There are times during water main breaks, or seasonal changes (such as lake turnover, after heavy storms, algae blooms, or snowmelt), when municipal water suppliers need to radically change disinfection residual doses, sometimes at the drop of a hat, to prevent severe water bourne illness in a cities population.
This could have been one of those surprise events where extra chlorine was needed that could overwhelm a normal aquarium dechlorination dose..
If you are in one of those areas where weather or external forces influences disinfection residual (almost anywhere), such as if your water supply comes from a river, or small reservoir, to protect your fish before doing a large water change, having a chlorine test kit my be required, or if not not, always do a sniff test before and during a water change. If its high, you may want to change your scheduled water change to thenext day, or even later in the day.

These test strips are available at pool supply stores or even places like Home Depot or other garden supply centers.
And many, like the one above, also have the ability to provide other important water parameter info such as pH, and alkalinity.
The event could have been a one time deal, but better safe than sorry.

maybe ur right and my 210g got caught in a chlorine dosage dump. Found my test kit , tested my 210g and 150g ammonia/nitrites @ 0 ppm, nitrates @ 40 ppm, nitrates are at what my water has right out of the tap.

Either way I'm gonna keep an eye on the 210g and keep retesting just to make sure my Bacterial colonies are still up and working correctly. 1 of my Oscar's isn't looking good but still breathing I hope he makes it. Other Oscars is better but still acting sickly. The last bichir acting normal which just means he sits around doing nothing most of the time.

Thanks for the help

Just thought of this as I’m reworking the water supply system in my house.
Don’t forget that if you have a traditional water heater this too will be full of the over treated water. Food for thought.
