Tank crashed? Some insight needed please.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Same dosage iv been using for the past couple years. I'm thinking I got caught in chlorine dosage dump while filling the tank. nothing has changed that's why it caught me by surprise. All other tanks are good and didnt experience any issues during the WC.

Just curious, where do you live?
The MCL(Maximum contaminant level) for nitrate in the U.S. is 10ppm, to have a tap water reading of 40ppm seems odd.

Sorry for the losses. MSounds like those extra water changes are what finished them off. I have had extra chlorine in my Tap before and seen my fish flash and act strange during a normal water change. If they added extra chlorine to the supply and your dose you normal de chlorinator amount your at risk. Then you change more water thinking that it would help and add even more chlorine to your system. Then the fish succumb to chlorine poisoning. This is why I now triple the amount of de chlorinator I use now. You will never know when the city is making changes to the supply so you need to be pro active.

In california. When I moved in to this house I tested the tap at 40 ppm nitrates. Called the city. They said the water at the public well that feeds my area was at less than 10 ppm. City claimed my higher nitrates might be due to the older piping running to my house, since I am in an older part of town or even the piping In the house .

I do know the water pipes in my house are the old steel style that rust from within. House was built in the 30s. They need to be upgraded but dont have the budget to run all new pex yet. Even at 40ppm . Over the last 5 years all my fish have been healthy and have never had a loss like this.

Yea I got a little to comfortable with my routine that I didnt smell the water till it was to late. The extra water changes were good thou, no chlorine smell in the water.

Even the 150g I filled right after the 210g that day had zero issues.

Just a freak accident that cost me soem bichir and my oscar. Live and learn to be more attentive I guess.
