I say his plants are sucking up the nitrates. If he's lazy, then his tank went thru its ammo & nitrite spikes already & he maybe didnt notice? He's very lightly stocked...

well I just talked to him and he is going to do a WC today and then either today or tomorrow pick up 6 more assorted african cichlids. Any problems with that?
no, as long as ammonia is 0 at this point should be fine. tell him to just keep an eye on his ammonia/nitrite levels
depends on how big his tank is on how often he needs to do wc's if he only has a few tiny africans in a 180 g he might be able to go several months before the nitrates need lowered. remember thats the only reason to do wc's, to lower nitrates ans possibly add some trace elements.
