I gave the tak another week to see how it went and it cleaered up. The tank has been crystal clear for about 2 - 3weeks however amonia is still at 8 and not dropig.

Anyone have any advice?

what bio media are you using...?

chemicals are a last resort but if you have stopped adding ammonia and removed all decaying particles something like Purigen or maybe just activated carbon could help lower that level

you know, I always read about people with their test kits doing water changes and bla bla to get their tank to 'cycle'... but I almost never hear about their lighting.

what does algae need to grow? poop... and light.

too much of one and not of the other... you end up with clear water or dead fish. You increase the bio-load on a newly 'cycled' tank, and depending on your the whole of your bio-filter, youve got trouble.

leave the light on till the tank turns green, then turn it off till it clears again.
(and if you can hit it with an extra large dose of ambient sunlight... say good bye to your ammonia for good) ;)
