Tank Decor Idea and Question? Anybody know about crystals/minerals?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its called quartz. and i think they would make a very good decor for the tank.

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz - very inert. I have a piece about 7"x7" that has been in a tank for years. It looks great after a soak in vinegar and a good scrubbing, but it gets gunky between the crystals pretty quick.

A couple of nice pieces like that probably look better above water, as much as I hate to say it! :)

I have some of the purple crystal, too. Mine is super sharp. I even cut myself. That would be my concern. But man, it would look nice..until my fish pooped on it for about two weeks.

Geodes are most often quartz. Should be no reactivity. I don't see how weight would be an issue- they're about the same density as other rocks that are used in tanks. My only concern would be the outer material because that could contain trace elements that might be harmful.

Thanks for the input all...

Im talking about the weight of the actual pieces that I took a picture of. The double columns are 2-3 feet high!

I guess it would depend on the thickness of the bottom. A lot of larger african cichlid tanks with stacked rock have them resting on the bottom on only a few points so the weight per square inch would be similar.

if youve got the 3k to score a chunk of rock that size... go for it

3k or a brick for the window. I'm guessing he goes with the brick because 3k buys a lot of fish! :D

I will stop by today and see how much that beast is...lol

$2,300 each

$4,000 for both!
