after 2 years of being in a 3ft deep tank one thing i have noticed is depth is fairly important to breed rays over 12inch disk

the extra depth gives the male more room to flip the female in anything less than 24 deep i think a male would have problems flipping a large female as most if not all breeding takes place in mid water

any veiws on this

That makes perfect sense

i agree... i have bred motoro several times. In the pond with a depth of 20" my male did not breed the female. as soon as they are put into a tank with either 24" or 28" height he would easily breed her.

Im assuming when you say flip the female, you mean the male flipping. i have heard people say for years, flip the female... female's never gets flipped, the male is the one doing the flipping.

Very interesting. I am very curious of what some of the top breeders have to say on this. Main reason is I just built a frame for a pond that is 8ftlongx5ftwidex40in. tall. I felt it is too tall and was going to rip it apart and build one 8ftx6ftx30in.

Rich; how deep was the old acrylic tank?
The p14 bred twice in that didn't they?

I hope in the futures rays breed . But my tank is only 24" deep

my tank has a depth of 25 inches and my rays have bred 5 times so far I am dealing with retics and hystrix though not the big rays.

I agree less than 24" is going to complicate matters. My 6'x6' tank is 20" deep, the previous owner had large motoros in there that did breed for him but I am sure it made things more difficult.

I prefer a 30" pond depth, 36" tall overall, its deep enough for the rays and still at a height that its easy to manage.

most of the tanks i have been looking at! at breeders in europe are 24" height would go 30" like my trop ponds but my tanks are 24" and my mate breeds his 20" motoro in 24" no probs

think its down to your own way of doing things if 24 works then fine but if not then the extra 6" may help

Been breeding motoros in 2.5 foot deep ponds for years. I think more then height overall room for her to get away is important, to big,and she will Surely get away, especially with males that don't have many notches on the belt. With seasoned males, I think they will get the job done fairly quickly and easily. I'm about to put my male back in the pond I'll try to get a mating vid.
