tank depth for adult rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
most of the tanks i have been looking at! at breeders in europe are 24" height would go 30" like my trop ponds but my tanks are 24" and my mate breeds his 20" motoro in 24" no probs

think its down to your own way of doing things if 24 works then fine but if not then the extra 6" may help

You have a pond now too

You told me in a email that one of your 8x3 was only 18inch deep and you never ever mentioned a tropical pond

Rich; how deep was the old acrylic tank?
The p14 bred twice in that didn't they?

I hope in the futures rays breed . But my tank is only 24" deep

You should be fine at 24 deep but anything less for a 16inch disk ray will be a problem I think but that's just my opinion

i agree... i have bred motoro several times. In the pond with a depth of 20" my male did not breed the female. as soon as they are put into a tank with either 24" or 28" height he would easily breed her.

Im assuming when you say flip the female, you mean the male flipping. i have heard people say for years, flip the female... female's never gets flipped, the male is the one doing the flipping.

It's not flipping as such the male does it doggy style then grabs the side of the disk with his mouth and sort of moves under the female

Once he is under her and locks in the male and female toss and turn a bit in mid water which Is why I feel that anything below 24 deep may make it harder for the pair to stay locked

I'm not saying its impossible but it may make it hard for the male to flip or move himself under the female

IMO i think 30" is good. If you go to deep, she may be able to get away easier :)

That's what she said.....

I never bred rays before, so I have no clue what is needed, but a 3' wide seems logical for more space for a breeding pair. Well, that is my plan at lease.
