Sagittaria subulata for the top maybe. I have to check conditions. I'll pickup a book this weekend.

BTW.. most likely will not be bare bottom. I will need more plants I'm sure.

i build it right in front of my tank and then try to place everything exactly where i had it, only on the inside :) i like the natural look too, there is nothing worse than a tank full of rare fish with pink and orange neon glow in the dark plants!! lmao.. i have a huge piece of driftwood in one corner and a smaller piece on the other side, like to kinda keep the middle open with some smaller rock caves and the tall plants in back with small ones in the middle/ front areas :)

I like that.
Maybe a couple floating plants to break up the lighting a bit

I have done the "in front of the tank" method too on a towel (acting as the tank). Given that my tank is eye level on my fireplace, I need a chair to get things in and out, so it's too tough to set everything up in front and then place.

Kinda how I developed my marker method, lol.
I too like making "swimming areas"
I coined the right side of my tank the oasis with smaller stones and a grouping of plants.
Even though my tank (in the OP) is a little different now (there is a little more height on the plantage and I flipped the DW so it's higher rather than lower) - I am still not sold on the height of my decorations.

I am going to to a manzman piece of DW that's more branchlike, but have to wait a bit. Once that is in, my tank will be complete and I will have the height I want.

The fish just stay lower and I want them to take advantage of the top half too, so more cover it is!

If you want an honest opinion, I need pics of the spots you are thinking
