Is there any real benefit of having a 90 gallon aquarium versus a 75 gallon tank with the same footprint?I can only think of one species off hand that needs a somewhat tallish tank and thats angelfish but other than that what are the benefits if any of a taller tank.

It is a larger voulme of water so the water quality would be better/cleaner. Other than that I can't think of any.I would go with a 90 over 75 if it's possible, same cost and so forth.

Hello; In a planted tank a taller tank can allow some of the plants to reach a good height without reaching the surface so much. I had some crypts in a 20 long that look much better in my 55. I also like to make levels in a tank and the taller tanks make this a bit more pleasing to my eye.

I'll take a 75 over a 90 any day, just like I'll take a 125 over a 150. Tall tanks are annoying, my arms aren't that long man--hard to reach the bottom.

Very good point. That is the practical limit for a tall tank for me as well. Working the bottom of a tank is a pain with tools. A tank no deeper than your arm is long and the top of the rim no higher than your arm pit.

Tall tanks can be a PITA, but the extra hassle is well worth it. The squat box tanks just don't hold up visually.

It's all opinion if you think tall tanks look better. Also, they're more prone to leaking the taller they get. Just my opinion, 24" is definitely the max I would go. I have a 24" tall 90 gallon, and I don't think it's any more visually pleasing than my shorter 125 gallon personally.
