Tank for Convict Pair?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You'd be fine with a 20 long for quite awhile. A 29 gallon is the suggested size for a pair, but a 20 long has the same vertical footprint, and con very rarely swims more then a foot above the bottom. But when the male gets large, a 20 long will be to tight; they like to stretch their legs, so to speak. For instance, I had my breeding pair in a 20 long, and my male was really frightened of me- he would hide whenever he seen me. I upgraded him to a 40 breeder, and it's like he's a different fish. He follows me around everywhere, and even jumps out of the water for a cichlid stick!

20 long would be fine. Ive bred a 6" male with a 2" female in one without a problem. Just as long as there ar NO other tankmates. Use a sponge filter with the fry though cause in such a small tank when the fry start to swim they will range all over and will get sucked up my any other filter. I like using small terracotta pots on their side as a breeding cave and then maybe a hiding place for the female. But in my experience, it has been females in pairs that are much mor agressive than males even if they are half the size of the male they will pick on him haha

Do you drive yet, or are your folks willing to take you over to Albany or even to NYC? I'd bet you could find a pretty good deal on a 40 or 55 if you're willing to take a road trip. Otherwise, if you have all the equipment for both 20 talls, you could make it work for a good while.

BTW, I looked at those pics, well done with the JD. Looks very healthy.

If you just want to breed them get one of those 30g rubbermaid containers. Cost something like 10 bucks a hydro v sponge and a 100w heater.

A 20g is perfect for a breedign pair of Convict Cichlids...............Then again, the 30g rubbermaid is a lot cheaper and can be stored inside a closet......But I would rather look at my fish, so I buy aquarium for them, not TARGET plastic containers........The only time when I buy anything at TARGET for the hobby is when I am hungry on building a DIY sump filter................

40 breeder is $40 at petco right now... Just saying. If $40 is too much money for someone, you might be in the wrong hobby.
