Tank Height

One reason for 24" being so common is because that's as tall as you can go with 1/2" acrylic. Going with a 30" tall tank is a substantial jump in price.

2 more questions. glass or acrylic? And getting it in the house. My door is 30 inches wide (31 actually, but let's call in 30 to be sure). So a 30 inch tall tank would fit thru the door sideways. But the stand would not if I got a 36 inch tank. How hard is it to disassemble and reassemble--is it just nailed together 2x4's and 4x4's? Or does it take some skill to re-assemble a wooden stand that will hold up that kinda weight for a long time? Cause I've heard it said that takes a good carpenter to make a solid table--it's not as easy as it looks. Can you even use wood for a 300-500 gallon tankstand, or do they have to be steel when you get into tanks that big?

My 180 stand cost a bit of money. It's made if welded steel. The person who made it said it could hold a house on Top of it. However I went overboard just to be sure.

That's where I'm going with this. There's A LOT of welders in my area. Maybe I could get one to weld a stand together in my house? I've seen welders use real thick tarps called fire blankets that sparks won't burn through. Put one on my floor, cover the walls, and weld away. That way I could get a 36 inch tankstand in my house? Does a welded steel stand cost alot more than a wooden one? Cause I'd trust the welders in my town a lot more than my skill with a drill and some wood screws. If the stand falls and the tank busts, my wife might get real tired of my aquarium hobby. I don't need that.

Another thing is I could build the stand around the sump. No worries about whether I can get a 125 aquarium in through the door of the tankstand--just build one around a tank? Is there any reason to take the sump tank out of the stand ever?

With a metal stand you will probably only have legs along the front and back allowing you to slide the sump in from the ends. You can do wood, if you look in the diy stand forum there is a good sticky ddiscussing the strength of wood.
