What is the minimum tank height do people think is acceptable for adult rays?

I have heard 18 inches, 24 inches, 30 and even 36 inches.

What are everyone's thoughts?

Rays Mostly stay at the bottom so they need a good footprint but they do like to go up and down on the sides of the aquarium every so often depending on the species of ray 24 inches should be acceptable

I'm interested as well. I think 24 is best but can rays breed and be happy in less? There is a large footprint tank in my area but it's only 16 inches high, I was wondering if it was enough room for them to breed.

Depends on species. Larger species obviously prefer taller tanks. Most rays like to surf the side of a tank, so yeah, 24” wouldn’t accommodate that very well for larger species. The bigger question is if you are going to be breeding at any point. Flipping the female over is difficult enough without having to contend with water depth.

My vote - 24" if only keeping rays..... IF planning on some fish above them I found 30" to be min. Seems like 24" puts the fish lower then they seem comfy with.........

I breed Pearls in a 18" tall tank. I have bred BD in this tank too.
Its a 22" tall but only holds around 18" tall of water. Not ideal but was built on site and had to sit under a window which governed the height of the tank. Pearl female is around 20" + disc. BD are 22" disc easy although these have not bred in a couple years due to the lack of a male!
