hi i was thinking of setting up a huge tank 400-500 gallon tank with a powerful filter and live rock and other rock in it with coral sand i was thinking of houseing a large blacktip grouper, one bamboo or epulet shark, one jeweled eel,one chain eel, cortez ray and one or two other larger fish like large butterfly fish or tangs but was wondering if i would be able to put some large brain corals and a sponge up towards the top of the tank would this be possibal?

With your list I think you are coral safe just not reef safe. Not 100% on that though. Look up each individual fish and you should get your answers.

Butterflies aren't really reef safe other than that nothing should eat corals.

I think the bigger issue you have is this tank would be overstocked a bit even if it was a 500 gallon. I would drop one eel, and have your stock list be.....1 grouper, 1 shark, 1 eel, 1 ray, and then a handful of fish that swim around. If you wanted to do more than that you would need some major filtration. Think big sump(s), big high quality skimmer, and lots of extra water volume and movement.

there are a few "reef safe" puffers but none that I cant think of off the top of my head that would get big enough to hang with the rest.

would a puffer get along with bamboo-epulett sharks, yellow or cortez rays, dragon, chain or jewel morays, blacktip grouper, large tangs, or large wrasse?

No, it wouldn't. They are known to pick at sedentary animals like sharks and rays. They can bite the eyes out because they look like natural food, like snails. So it wouldn't be a good idea to put a puffer in with this stock list.

There are no reef-safe puffers. They are best kept as the main attraction with smaller, fast-moving fish or in a HUGE tank with fish it won't pick at.
