I was under the impression that fish lack the CNS required to "feel pain" and as far as salty nets a pet store owner taught me years ago that doing a saltwater dip on new fish kills parasites that are stowaways on the fish when delivered from his distributors vice versa for saltwater fish..... Anyone?

I've known about the practice of dipping saltwater fish in freshwater for a few minutes to rid them of any parasites they might have, and I have done it in the past but is very stressful to the fish.I don't recall hearing too much about vice versa though and that I've never done.

Fresh water dips are a common treatment for external parasites but don't do much other than that.
I've heard of large Angels and puffers that have gone quite a while(20-24 hours) in a fw dip. Nothing I can confirm though.

I've heard of dipping saltwater fish in freshwater. I've heard of dipping corals in freshwater as well. And freshwater plants in some kind of solution, I forget what though. I never heard of freshwater fish getting dipped in saltwater though.

Might be kind of moot but do they actually tattoo the fish in the store or do they come in that way?

They are imported to HK that way, and of the 2 times i've been to the large tropical fish market in Guangzhou China, the fish in store seemed to have already been tattooed...

I guess if you also consider the amount of fatalities that must happen during the process, it would only make sense if it was happening at the source, such as the farms breeding the fish...
