Tank in window

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just put up a dark curtain to pull across on really hot sunny days. With good filtration waterchanges and a few plants algae could be controlled by a few bristlenose plecos.Just keep up on your maintenance

I'm actually putting a tank in the window for algae purposes and hope I'm succesful! I think Algae is getting a bad name, but aren't all aquatic plants just one form of algae? I will be including other types of "higher plants", but for the most part, I'm setting up a tank for my lovely mollies and their thousands of offspring to live so happy and peaceful. (before they are sent to the datnoids)

And besides, growing algae will help the environment and your house! This is a quote from Wikipedia...(It is estimated that algae produce about 73 to 87 percent of the net global production of oxygen[1]--which is available to humans and other terrestrial animals for respiration.) So THERE!

my 75g african is in front of huge window. i just have the heater turned down really low, and the sunlight keeps the temp around 78-80. In the winter i just turn up the heater a tad. As far as algae is concerned i would just get a bristlenose, or maybe a school of Otto Cats and they should keep in down. I have a 10g that i put rocks to grow algae then put them in with my africans and they eat off of them for awhile until my pair of Bushynose gorge themselves on it. It saves me some money that way, and i my fish love it.

I think if you put a shade on the tank in the summer and if you have A/C that might help keep the tank cooler as well. The idea of turning the heater down in the summer should help too. Double heater should work in the winter. Does the tank face a public area? I think it would be awsome to share your hobbie with everyone if they can see them. I like the idea for sure!

I've had 2 tanks in different window, one had some shade from out side, the other had full sun. Full sun make some good algae. I never had a heating problem, or cooling one for that matter. It will heat up some, but shouldn't be much. Just don't keep fish that are sensitive to changes, would be my advice.

I have a 55 gallon that is in the sun if the curtains are opened. I have had terrible trouble with algae bloom. There is no algae anywhere else in the tank but my water is always green. I can change the water every 5 days or so to control it but who wants to change water that much. Good luck with keeping it in the sun.

The window is on the south side of the house. There is no way my parents would go for rearranging the front room. Its going in the front room due to the fact my dad dont want that much water on a upper level. Its a hard enough time talking him into this tank let alone rearranging the front room. I told when i first got a tank all i wantd was a 10 gallon...lol :D So its gonna be tough talking him into this but i got my mom already and maybe shell back me up.

haha my parents thought the same thing until they saw the 75 gallon my neighbor gave me. I told them it was free and I would be a full to pass it up lol.

With 7 tanks I change water more often than every 5 days. Some people do partials every day.

so in answer to who wants to do it? I dont know. but as far as who does it. LOTS of us do.

Psycho- I say go for it. Scrape the walls every day if needed, thats what a mag-float is for. Thats only a 10 min job. let the bristle noses take care of the decorations, you do the glass.

As far as cooling, if the 'rents have AC then you should be good. when I was your age I had a tank in my room, second floor & hotter than heck. I bought a window AC & the parents paid the electro.

Turning down the heater wont cool the water. you can keep a bunch of water bottles frozen & put a couple in to cool the water as needed. when they melt put them back in the freezer & pull out a couple more.

one heater, rated for a 75g+ tank should be fine. two heaters in a 55 are hard to balance, one will work & the other may likely not even turn on.

I can take care the the glass...as for a bristle nose i dunno if my Ps would agree with him being in there. I bought the 55, filter and light for $75 and no way was i going to pass it up!! If my dad doesn't allow me to put it up in the living room then ill store it till i move out! I'd even take it to college w/ me if i could, I dont need a bed i can sleep on the floor if there is a space issue in the dorm :)

Are bristle noses a type of pleco???
