Tank is Cracked!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is making me super sick to my stomach! I LOVE MY FISH and everything was perfect!
Relax. No need to let it tie you up in knots. Definitely take the advice of some of the other fishkeepers who said to put your fish in tubs. Ruptured tanks are BAAAAD and I've been there before...trust me and don't let it get that far. Anything that goes wrong with your tank sucks!!

The stand was one my father built for me with engineered/drawn plans. The footprint is extremely sturdy and it is solid as a rock.

I did not have any Styrofoam underneath the tank only because I had leveled the entire thing before I moved the stand into place.

So the stand is not the same manufacturer as the tank? The stand is home made? Then I can almost guarantee you they will not honor the warranty.

Update

Bad news: Tank finally cracked all the way with a leak. We were able to get fish in buckets and tubs easily and avoided an even worse disaster. Drying carpet and stand now. Tank is empty now and ready to be moved.

Good news: No fish loss and I am getting a brand new tank courtesy of my warranty.

I am considering rehoming my largest fish. She is either a synspilum or bifas. Anyone possibly interested? I may end up posting on the mfk market soon also.

All things considered we fared pretty well with this situation. Thanks everyone for all of your help and advice.

Glad to hear they honored the warranty.

I think you have the right mindset for this.. counting yourself lucky that you caught that before a catastrophic failure. It could have been so much worse.

Glad you're getting a new tank.

Thank you. Yeah, I guess I do. My husband asked me if the fishkeeping was worth it still. I absolutely did not hesitate to say that they are indeed worth it still. I love my fish and am willing to do whatever is necessary. I understand from a catastrophic disaster standpoint that this could have been way worse than it ended up. I'm hoping to take a few of the lessons learned and apply them to the new tank when it gets set up soon. I still have no clue what have caused the crack. Maybe it was my glass-bangers or a defect in the glass itself? No telling.

This is also giving me the benefit of doing some much needed deep cleaning on equipment since it is all dismantled. I will even redecorate the tank a little differently, also.

I'll try to remember to post a picture of the new tank when it gets up and running and the fish are happily swimming in it again.

I'm watching the tank and crack to see how it goes first. No water leak yet which is probably why I didn't notice it sooner.

Take a dry erase marker and mark over it so you have something to go by if this ever happens. Glad they are helping you out too bad it was total failure

glad to hear it all worked out. Aqueon (formerly All Glass Aquarium) is a good company

their 180's are made with 1/2" glass so glass banging fish are out of the question.

1/2" glass is insanely strong.

its also good that they will, contrary to popular belief, warranty a tank that is NOT on one of their stands. its the competing company (Marineland) that does not.

as far as styro under the tank goes, ironically, styro will void the warranty on Aqueon tanks as they have a floating bottom design and are meant to sit directly on the stand.

sounds like a glass defect to me. a fault of their glass supplier, not necessarily the craftsmanship of Aqueon. I have a 150g from them and love it (runs to check tank lol)
