Tank Leaks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My 190 leaked, but I had 12 inch plus golden sharks hit the center brace and knock it into the water. The tank was still ok at this time. I drove to the lfs to ask if I should drain it... everyone said yes. When I got home I had about 20 gallons left in it. A seam broke.

It was 12 years old. I moved my sharks to my 125 and got rid of them a week later(wasn't going to have them break it too.)

I had a 75 gal change from a small leak to the rushing waterfall that destroyed my 2nd floor bedroom. Reseal Used Tanks.

after reading this, and was considering to buy a used tank...I'm now leaning toward spending the extra money if need be to be safer =)

never sacrfice quality for money in this hobby if you can help it.

if want used because you can't find what you want at the LFS or you cant afford new, then fine. we do the best with what we have.

but if you can afford new, don't go used just to save a buck. it just isn't worth it. at least with the aquarium itself.

I would definately put more trust into new tanks. But most of the used tanks that I have seen are actually pretty good because they usually are filled and kept filled until the owner wants to get rid of them. I would only really worry if the tank was filled and then left to sit for a long time. Silicone should stay somewhat plyable, but once it is has wet water like that and the sediment from the water interact with it then it can have the tendency to become hard and brittle. So my opinion is obvious New is better if you can afford it but used is good but you just have to examine the seems and make your own opinion on the conditions. I've never had a used tank with a bad seem except for the ones that I have bought and resealed.
