Wondering if there's any studies on any positive or the more likely, negative effects on fish having continues light on them? While I'm completely capable of turning off the light in the living room tank every evening, I'm wonder if there's any documentation of draw backs to continues lighting.

think about it fish cant close their eyes as they have no eyelids Also fish rest on the bottom when the tank lights are off and it is dark in the room. Also some freak out when tank lights are turned on. Look at catfish and plecos that hide from light. I would say fish actually prefer no lights

If you want your fish to exhibit as natural behavior as possible in an aquarium....we need to limit lighting to the hours of sunlight....probably no more than 10-12hrs.

itll stress the fish most likely if its never off. not to mention
the algae that will occur with that much light lol... why not
just get one of those cheap dollar timers for your light?

Thanks for your replies, but my question isn't "what's natural?" I know the answer to that. Asking more for specific documented research one way or another. Also, I would argue that constant darkness is just as bad as constant light.

I only have mine on for 6-8 hours a day only turn the lights on when I get home from work. Figure there's no point burning watts when I'm not home to look at my gt. I'm not growing any plants mind you except for a massive Anubis nana that hardly needs any light and still grow out of control. I feel it's a good idea to have them off overnight so the fish can rest. Got a smaller tank with my 2 female Gts that doesn't have a light at all. All fish seem to be fine

I'd like to see what research you can pull up on constant dark being worst than constant light... I can't just take your opinion.... ;p

I have no problem hearing your opinions. On the topic of light and dark... Humans can live with constant light, we can sleep through it. However, constant darkness long term can damage eye sight as well as lead to depression. Not saying fish are the same as people, but too much of any one thing can be bad.

I have had no lights on any of my tanks for years and all my fish do great.. The light is really only for our viewing pleasure or to grow plants
