Tank maintenance safety (mine !!!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used to have a RD that would bite me like crazy, I had to get gloved because I would blees. I still have the scars. But my BP bites me when I clean the tank. lol But that does not hurt but he gets so mad it's unbelieveable.

They sell gloves at Big Al's that go right up your arm, you could get them. That would help, that is where I got mine.

Gloves arrived yesterday. Buster's evening poo gravel vac was interesting. I was very relieved to have the gloves.
He seemed especially pissed that I had protection and attacked me even more furiously. The gloves seemed sturdy and should be able to take the punishment for a while. Well worth the money as I am no longer stressed and worried about any tank maintenance with Buster.

I am always worried about being attacked with big fish. If you have a python gravel changer they sell longer tubes that you can interchange. I bought the 24" one and most of my fish tanks aren't that deep. I also tend to slap around my fish that come after me if I get the chance. They usually won't mess with you if they think you're going to mess with them first. My male barred midas always comes after me and my amphilophus sagittae are the worst they always have fry and they'll jump out of the water to bite me if I get close. My flowerhorns are usually pretty friendly when I have my hands in their tanks (if they aren't breeding) they just beg for food.

 i remember when you were trying to get my sagittae out of that tank, that male is a monster.

But i agree with cam, i just got a longer tube.

I have a 14" Jaguar that is evil. He used to go for my hand but I found his Kryptonite. I just keep the net between him and my hand (just setting there) and he wont come near me.

That's OK if you have 3 hands !! i need one hand to hold the gravel vac, the other to hold the other end of the tube over the bucket.

However, if it works for you, in your situation, then good on you brother !!!

I started hand feeding my flowerhorn when it was very small. I got to the point where I can pet him at each feeding. I can do whatever I want in the tank and he does not bother me on bit. But if anyone else puts a hand in the tank he will draw blood.

bully him back alan, lol dont take no **** lol

Tried that, didn't work. Just made him even more aggressive.

We have worked out a good compromise between us. He allows my hands in the tank for any reason except for gravel vac'ing. But once the gravel vac is out, the rule book is thrown out the window and it's every man for himself. My big gloves are a godsend for that now !
