by any chance do this fish gnomes you speak of have evil cousins? once that sabotage your water, spook your fish, and on occasion open the cover on your tanks?

you really should be doing a water change at the least every month with a red devil in the tank don't listen to guppy because once you start neglecting a tank it is just luck that your fish are living...
I am NOT advocating neglecting your tank! That the one tank thrived was a fluke, what was amazing was that I didn't come home one day to a stinking mess of grey water and dead fish. My more usual schedule is testing twice a week as a precaution and a routine water change of 30% for community fish, and up to 75% for predators. I also siphon any detritus as I spot it and rinse the top filter pad weekly. As for feeding enough the angels would go from 1"+ to 4"+ inaround 3 months and the balas from 2" to 5" in the same time with great coloration, ((I'd sell them at that size or first spawning). The tank got flake food twice a day, live food (alternating brine shrimp and tubifex worms) once a day. It was a once in a lifetime tank set up.

I think those are gremlins and they also cause typos.
