Tank mate aggression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
exactly! i know it sucks right? i started with a 20 gallon and SA cichlids. i quickly realized i needed a bigger tank. my old man only let me get a 55 but i have a nice little community going on right now. i'm saving for the mother ship as soon as i move out ;)
if you're not happy with the selection of africans you can house maybe try out some dwarf cichlids. SA dwarfs are beautiful and good communnity fish. just find a good online site that has a wide variety. petsmart and petco only offer german blue rams and bloivian rams.

ok. I think i get it a little more. I need a bigger tank because I need more hiding spaces and I need more fish to reduce aggression and more fish means a bigger tank. great. So if I did only Electric Yellows, how many could i have in in a 29 gallon?

Aw man, I mean real fish. Not algae eaters. So when do you think I have to get rid the other fish?

Demasoni are dwarf Mbuna and we r lucky they do stay small because pound for pound, they are more like Convicts on the aggression scale especially towards similar looking fish (color, pattern etc).

They do best in groups of one male to several (4-6) females. I started with a group of 17 in my 135 and the males beat the group down to 5, 2 males and 3 females. They ve since spawned and the group is back up to about 15 fish again but I find they are still the most aggressive mbuna I keep and I house several large species including a 6"+ crabro.

Is lose the RTS and Chinese algae eater and keep a small group of a single species if I were you. I have several 4-5" labs and a 6" Acei so these fish still grow quite large. Demasoni stay small but their aggression really requires a larger footprint IME. Wether it's perceived as rude or not, single adult Mbuna in a 29 gallon really isn't enough space. Pics of my 135 in my sig to see just how big these fish can and will get.

Best of luck!

+1 JC. You could try out P. Saulosi, they stay small, the males look like demasoni and the females look like yellow labs.
