Tank Mates for GT?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Update- I bought 55 gallon tank. So my question here is: should I put smaller ciclhlids in my tank and make my GT the center-piece? or should I put a few larger fish in there with him like dats? What do you guys think?

i would avoid other cichlids in a 55 with the GT. the GT will most likely fight with the other cichlid for dominance and either kill the other one or end up with torn fins (possibly more damage) and will end up not looking its best.
a 55 isnt big enough for dats plus a GT will likely outgrow dats from what ive read about dats being really slow growers. i wouldnt but if you still have queries go to the "other monster fish" section and into the "datnoids" section and ask those guys.

in all honesty you would be better off with a few catfish (no less than 4" when mature), a few dithers (possibly barbs of some type but no less than 3" when mature) and the GT itself if your wanting it to be the centre piece.

a dither is a fish that promotes confidence in a fish. they see the fish shoaling and take this as no threat is outside. you also get target fish, usually convicts or jewels, that take the brunt of the aggression from a grumpy fish so the other "prize" fish dont suffer it and get damaged.
dithers can also fill up the top of the tank and provide constant activity so its more pleasing to the eye, filament barbs are great for this.

I currently have my GT in a tiny 10 gallon tank with two other cichlids. He's only 2.5 inches long. His tank mates are a 2 inch Acaei Cichlid and a blue African cichlid, the kind of which they usually sell as "assorted" African. The "assorted" African is by far the most agressive fish in the tank. He constantly bullies my Acaei. The GT is very peaceful. He never bothers the other fish. Occasionaly the little mean African will get a little bold and the GT will stand his ground and drive him off, but nothing serious.

I know my GT is a baby still but I'm hoping he stays peaceful like he is now. He's actually pretty shy..

Anybody have any feedback on this scenario?
