Indeed, on the safer side, I'd go Aro (If you're in the US, Black it is), Stingray, and/or a similarily sized Tig or Juruense, I don't believe those would pose a problem. 
The Gar idea could work, but I'm iffy on their growth speed, too big they'll eat the Basses, too small, they'll be outgrowed...
