Tank mates for saxatilis pair

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The main problem is getting a cichlid that will be able to actually eat the fry. I'm sure you know already, but Crenicichla are superb parents. It might almost work better if you got a group of fish that specialized in eating fry.

Go with catfish. Thats about your best bet. Lima Shovelnose, pictus, raphael, the armoured cats. As soon as the lights go out its game on.

Really, you should remove the fry and seperate them into individual tanks by size. Not only will this help them grow faster, but it will help to cut back on cannibalism.

didn't think of an armoured cat before. that just might work.

i forgot you were looking for something to eat the fry

Catfish is what i would say either a fast pimelodus to swoop in and gobble some fry or a armored cat that could take a beating and once the light are out the fry are in trouble with just about any catfish

Theres plenty of fish that could help you out with this problem

Marble goby ( Gets big an adult could eat your pair so mabye not them)
Pink tail chalceus
red tail barracuda ( may get beaten up)
charax ( might fight or get beaten up)
Larger barbs ( many will eat small but fish but many get huge)
Centopoma Species ( leapard may get beaten up other species are hard to find )
Target fish Therapon jarbua ( heard of them eating fish not sure how they would fair with a pair of pikes )
Convict ( worth a shot cheap tuff and fast and may take out a few fry)

Maybe a large acara like an Aequidens diadema? I have one around 7" and tries to eat any fish thats about 1.75" or less. Not too aggressive but can hold its own.
