Hi

I finally have a 220 gallon tank that I can use to house a Festae pair ( I am not targeting breeding just they look good together). I have wanted to do this and finally can . I would appreciate any opinions on potential tank mates.

I realize this is a hit or miss question but in my years with other cichlids I have been surprised from time to time who gets along with whom.

Thanks

22o gallon is big. you can get away with pretty much any sa or ca cichlids as long as its not over crowding and enough space for other smaller cichlids to hide

Ir you're gonna house a pair and they decide to breed there's a lot of chance that you won't be able to keep anything else in that tank. But other large, aggressive cichlids would be the best bet... or big dither-type fish like clown loaches or silver dollars.

I probably wouldn't keep tank mates with a pair of festae myself, if they spawn you could lose a lot of fish. There was a thread a whole back that showed a whole tank wiped out by a festae pair in an afternoon, it was pretty stunning.

220 is not really that big when your' re talking about 12-16" fish that are arguably some of the most aggressive cichlids...... when they are not breeding. I personally think youd be better off picking some non cichlids if you were going to try. Maybe some schoolers, or something that stays closer to the top. I dont really think plecos would be totally safe once the pair spawns.

I don't even see why you would want other fish when you have a festae pair... Almost anything next to their breeding dress is going to look pretty dull anyway. ;)

if your gonna breed Festae they will need to be alone they get very nasty and make sure you put alot of hiding spots for your female that the male cant get into out he will kill your female
