Tank mates RED Terrors

Thanks for the input what I was thinking was a non cichlid species something that might help clean up like a smaller pleco, shark or catfish. So a bottom feeder and perhaps top swimmers like silver dollars.

Thanks

Folks

I've kept my Striped Raphael catfish with lots of breeding cichlids, he's practically indestructible...but will simply run off and hide if he gets attacked. He makes an excellent clean up guy too. This guys been thru a lot with me. Look how big he is for a Raphael.

I currently keep a Raphael with my Festae and have kept them in the past with breeding Festae and other larger cichlids without any problems. Like Balton said, they are built pretty tough and will hide when things get rough. But none of my fish ever pays any attention to him. Balton, that is a huge Raphael BTW. I also keep Clown Loaches with them. Mel is the only person that I know that has kept a larger breeding pair of Festae with other cichlids. He had a few things going for him though; tons of experience, a massive tank, and equally aggressive tankmates.

I have kept a Granulosus catfish in my tanks for a year and a half with zero issues... he looks close to the Rapheal cat with heavy armour, but gets bigger. They are slow growers too. I do not have a pair, but I do have many aggressive cichlids in a 265g tank. If I were you I'd go with a catfish as they are great. Pleco's are not the great cleaners some people make them out to be and they create a lot more waste in some cases.

Thanks for the input That is a big Cat man

I plan on keeping my Festae for quite awhile, as such Loachs seem good but they enjoy binging in a group but they can get large also. I am only using a 220 gallon tank and a festae pair catfish and 3-4 loach that can get 12+ inches seems a bit much

What do you folks think

Thanks

My LFS had a megalodoras uranoscopas the other day when I was shopping for my B-Day present to myself. I wanted it really bad but ended up passing. Instead I got a small Ornate bichir because I really miss my old one since I sold it to Stan.

Thanks, he's small for a catfish but big for a striped raphael. I hope he grows a few more inches.

I think you should pass on the clown loaches, they don't mix well with CA/SA cichlids. Not that they don't get along, it's just that large cichlids swim around majestically and CL's are real darty and zippy. They cramp the cichlid's style imo and annoy them to no end. Also they have to be kept in shoals and when they start getting bigger, now you have another whole group of fish opposed to just one fish peeing in your water lol. I think the better choice is a smaller to medium size catfish.

Folks

I really appreciate your time, input and experience. I am grateful for the sharing and candid comments- what a great site and better group of people.

Thanks again

I will post some pics when I get things squared away- Filters tomorrow

Now that is closer to my Granulosus. At least size wise... they get about 24-30" correct?? I'm not too sure, but I know they get pretty big. Good luck with your new Bichir.

Kosta, you are welcome and this is what this site is for.
