Tank mates suggestions please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
nero im pretty sure he means 1 oscar that is 5-6" but yeah your O should def get larger than 12in, it will get that big within the first year, and yeah sorry its hard to know when someone new on here is experienced or not so its just better to err on the safe side, its better you already know something and me reiterate it than you not know and i just assume you do you know? but yeah i think with that filtration and stuff if you can get them to get along then you would add another semi-aggressive cichlid (though i think a JD will be too aggressive) to the tank, but with that tank its really not the gallons that is the issue, its just that once all grown the space will be kind of cramped, but if you can get them all to get along then you should be fine

I read the stock incorrectly, I saw 5 6" oscars and I'm thinking why am I the only one thinking this thing is over stocked. In that case you could try a JD in there or some other mid range aggro cichlid. Sorry for not reading it correctly.

I'm female ;)

Yeah, I only have one O who is currently 5-6" depending on whether you count the tail in the measurement. I have read that the average size they reach in home aquaria is 12", however he could get past that I guess.

I have:
1 Oscar = max 12"
1 Green Sev = 8-10"
1 Red Spot Sev = 8-10"
1 Convict = 5-6"
1 x Poly = 10"

5 fish!
Your sizes are a little off...

1 Oscar = max 16", possibly 17-18"
1 green Sev = 10-12"
1 Red spot sev = 10-12"
1 Con = 5-6"
1 P. delhezi = 12-16"

I agree w/ Aquanero, that footprint doesn't allow the fish enough space. Also, your sizes are a little off...

I was a 'little off' with the poly - though max reported size according to polypterus.info is 14". Can't remember all sizes off the top of my head at almost 2am in the morning. Where have you got the info from that they reach 16"?

I am going on average sizes for the O's and Sevs. No way of knowing what size they will stop at as each is unique.

yeah 14-15" is probably more likely for the O but it isnt that uncommon for them to reach 16" it just takes a couple years and very clean water (and good genes of course lol) they def get larger than 12" though when taken care of properly

and nofh 13, your O needs a bigger tank asap, how big is it? at a year old it should be 12in and that is as long as a 55g is wide so that really isnt ideal to keep a fish in a tank where he cant even turn around properly and you will have to be doing multiple water changes a week in that size tank to keep it clean enough to not stunt him...

Info is from one of KingEl's posts from a few months ago (don't remember where it was posted, I just remember hearing him say before that they can get to that size, and I trust that he was correct). And the "average" O will not stop growing at 12", I'd say 14" is probably average, though it is definitely not uncommon for them to reach 15"+.
